ACCC strengthens its cybersecurity by becoming Australia’s digital ID regulator
To address the increased security workload following the creation of the National Anti-Scam Center and the launch of Digital ID, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has launched a new program aimed at strengthening its cybersecurity.
The agency’s new Cyber Security Strengthening Program will enable it to further develop its cyber security capabilities as it becomes increasingly involved in the data security of the Australian people.
“The ACCC’s Cyber Security Strengthening Program is focused on [on] compliance and maturity improvement against Essential 8 of the ASD and the Protection Security Policy Framework primarily,” the ACCC told Cyber Daily.

The ACCC is set to become the national digital ID regulator on December 1 with the Digital Identification (Transitional and Consequential Provisions) Bill 2024.
The regulatory role will involve the accreditation of organizations and agencies that provide digital ID services, the selection and approval of institutions for participation in the Australian Government’s digital ID system and the enforcement of legislation on the “non-privacy aspects” of digital identification.
The National Anti-Scam Center is also expected to launch on December 1.
