Cybersecurity is the sixth highest-paid software-related role in the world
Cybersecurity specialists have outpaced AI and software engineers, with Melbourne in the top 20 cities finding a software role globally.
A new study analyzed the salaries of software professionals around the world to determine which jobs are the best in terms of pay, and cybersecurity ranks well in the top 10.
The Cybersecurity Specialist role ranks sixth globally, with an average global salary of US$62,310, or just over AU$90,000.
However, the highest paying position is Enterprise Architect, which brings in an annual salary of $83,886, or a whopping $128,000 in dollar terms. The technical program manager, chief technology officer, software architect, and site reliability engineer round out the top five above for cybersecurity, with site reliability engineers paid only a few hundred dollars more.
AI engineer, software engineer, devOps engineer, and cloud engineer make up the rest of the top 10, with cloud engineer bringing in US$51,528, or almost $80,000 locally.
The new report, from Indian software company NSoft, was created from a list of 30 cities known for their technology industries. Average salaries come from job search company Glassdoor, while the survey also looked at the number of positions and software companies, broadband speeds and quality of life factors to determine the best city to find a software-related position.
And, unsurprisingly, the best city is San Francisco, where Silicon Valley dominates the global tech space.
Only one Australian city makes the top 20, and it only barely makes it. Melbourne ranks 20th in terms of places to find a software-related role, with 1,942 positions open at the time of the survey, paying an average of US$72,727 across just over 2,000 software companies.
Compare that to San Francisco and the difference is stark. There are nearly 2,500 unfilled positions at more than 6,900 companies, and the average annual salary is north of US$137,000.
“In the world of technology, one thing is certain: software professionals are always on their toes, adapting and evolving as quickly as the technology they work with,” said Darko Marić, team leader at recruitment at NSoft, in the report.
“And as the world becomes more and more dependent on technology, these professionals are needed more than ever. »
